Hey Pune, it’s time to talk about a serious health issue that’s been making headlines lately. The number of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in the city has shot up, with a total of 73 patients reported so far. What’s even more concerning is that over half of these patients are in critical condition and are currently receiving treatment in intensive care units (ICUs).

But here’s the kicker—the cost of treatment for GBS is through the roof, averaging over ₹5 lakh per patient. This hefty price tag has made it impossible for many families to afford the necessary care for their loved ones. However, there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has stepped in to provide financial assistance for economically weaker GBS patients. This move is a game-changer for those who are struggling to cover the exorbitant costs of treatment. With 14 patients currently on ventilators, the expenses continue to pile up, making it even more challenging for families to cope.

When it comes to GBS treatment, patients typically undergo either plasma therapy or IVIG treatment. Plasma therapy involves removing contaminated plasma from the body and replacing it, costing around ₹3–3.5 lakh. On the other hand, IVIG treatment consists of immunoglobulin injections, with each injection setting patients back ₹20,000–₹25,000.

The breakdown of treatment costs includes medicines (plasma or IVIG) at ₹3.5–4 lakh, ICU stay for 5 days at ₹50,000, and ventilator support for 5 days at another ₹50,000, totaling ₹4.5–5 lakh. The costs vary depending on the hospital size, with smaller hospitals charging around ₹10,000 per day for ICU stay and ventilator support.

To alleviate the financial burden on families, PMC Health Chief Dr. Nina Borade has highlighted the corporation’s commitment to assisting GBS patients in need. By offering financial aid to those diagnosed within PMC limits in the last two weeks, the PMC is aiming to make a real difference in the lives of struggling families.

So, Pune, let’s keep an eye on this developing story and hope for positive outcomes for all GBS patients in the city. Stay safe and take care of your health!
