Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has kicked off a major “deep clean” drive starting with Dhole Patil Road in an effort to tackle the city’s waste management challenges. The initiative saw the removal of 40 tonnes of mixed waste, including dry, wet, and garden waste, from various key areas such as Pune Station, Bundgarden Road, RTO, and Sangam Bridge.

Key details of the drive include collaboration across multiple departments, with the Electrical Department clearing unattended cables and repairing streetlight poles, the Road and Drainage Departments addressing footpath and thoroughfare repairs, and the Solid Waste Management team focusing on clearing garbage from roads and public spaces. Anti-encroachment efforts were also made, with illegal handcarts and unattended vehicles being removed, along with banners and posters to reduce clutter.

Over 640 personnel, including road cleaning squads and workers from the solid waste management department, participated in the initiative. The drive focused on extensive waste clearance, particularly in high-traffic areas, and paid special attention to chronic waste buildup spots with plans for strict monitoring and fines for offenders.

While the initiative has been welcomed by civic activists and residents, they emphasize the need for such drives to be a regular practice and for consistent monitoring of chronic waste dumping spots. Continued efforts are needed to maintain long-term cleanliness and address the city’s waste management challenges effectively.
