The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is not taking any chances when it comes to combating mosquito-borne diseases in the city. In the past two months, they have issued a whopping 337 notices to individuals, societies, and commercial establishments to address mosquito breeding spots, with fines totaling over Rs 78,600 from January to June.

With the monsoon season in full swing, the public health department is on high alert for waterborne and vector-borne diseases. Local bodies have been directed to implement preventive measures to prevent disease outbreaks during this time.

Despite the looming threat, the PMC has reported 341 suspected cases of dengue in the last six months, with only 10 confirmed cases. Additionally, nine cases of chikungunya have been reported so far.

To combat mosquito breeding, the PMC has launched an awareness campaign led by various departments. They are focusing on cleaning premises, eliminating breeding sites, and spraying insecticides in high-risk areas to prevent disease outbreaks.

In addition to awareness campaigns, the PMC is emphasizing collaborative measures for disease prevention. This includes ensuring diagnostic facilities are available, maintaining an adequate stock of medicines, establishing quick response teams, setting up control rooms, engaging ASHA workers in epidemic surveys, facilitating inter-departmental coordination, and educating the public about epidemic diseases.

Dr. Suryakant Devkar, assistant health officer of PMC, reassures the public that the dengue situation in the city is under control, with no instances of underreporting. Breeding spots have been swiftly addressed through the issuance of notices and collection of fines.

The PMC’s enforcement efforts are evident in the number of notices issued and fines collected each month. As they continue their proactive stance against mosquito breeding, cooperation from authorities and public participation is crucial to ensure a healthier and safer environment for Pune residents during the monsoon season.
