The political scene in Pune is heating up as five former corporators from a major party are reportedly jumping ship to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Following discussions with senior BJP leaders in Mumbai, these corporators are expected to officially join the party in the coming days.
With the local body elections on the horizon after a delay, the BJP is looking to solidify its hold in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) following a successful run in the recent Assembly elections. The party, which previously held a strong majority in the 2017 PMC elections, is anticipated to maintain its dominance in the upcoming polls.
The decision of the five former corporators to align themselves with the BJP comes as no surprise, as they are said to have received assurances of key roles within the party and tickets to contest in the PMC elections. Among these corporators are two former female representatives and three male colleagues, some of whom are eyeing seats in the Assembly.
This strategic move by the corporators is seen as a way to avoid competing against the BJP in the municipal elections and instead benefit from the party’s growing influence in Pune. The official announcement of their entry into the BJP is expected to take place soon, marking a significant shift in the city’s political landscape.
