The Cyrus Poonawalla Group has made the decision to back out of a controversial project at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) after facing backlash from student groups. The project, which involved allocating a large plot of land for the construction of a convention center, vintage car showroom, and restaurant, sparked protests due to concerns over its impact on the campus environment.

Student groups, including the Vidyapeeth Viyarthi Sangharsh Kruti Samiti, raised objections to the project, citing the importance of the green space and the potential displacement of the Dr. Ambedkar statue. The group expressed worries that the project could lead to the privatization of the area and limit student access to the facilities.

While university officials had initially shown interest in the project, students and faculty members have called for a focus on addressing more immediate needs, such as expanding hostel facilities and renovating existing buildings. The campus’s lush greenery is seen as essential to providing a conducive academic environment, and many are concerned about the loss of this natural space.

The decision to withdraw from the project comes as a victory for the student groups who had been vocal in their opposition, highlighting the importance of preserving the campus’s environment and prioritizing the needs of the university community.
