Pune was hit with a major power outage on Saturday, affecting nearly 2.49 lakh consumers in various areas. The outage was caused by a fire at the Talegaon-Lonikand 400 KV tower line, which led to a deficit of 346 MW. The fire was reportedly started by an unidentified person near the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) substation in Talegaon.
The outage lasted for about an hour, from 3:05 PM to 4:05 PM, impacting industrial, commercial, residential, urban, and rural consumers in areas such as Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chakan MIDC, Bhosari, and Manchar. Power supply was cut off to several high-voltage channels of MSEDCL to prevent further damage to the grid.
Efforts to restore power were quickly underway, with MSETCL engineers and technical teams inspecting the affected transmission line and extinguishing the fire. Once the tower line was checked thoroughly, power supply was restored to the affected areas. Authorities have advised residents to avoid setting fires near high-voltage infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.
