The state archaeology department has embarked on a major restoration project for the Pratapgad Fort in Satara. The project aims to repair the 3-km main wall of the fort, which has suffered damage from weathering and overgrowth. This is the first time such extensive repairs are being carried out for the fort, which holds historical significance for Maharashtra.
Assistant Director Vilas Wahane outlined the plan, which includes using cranes to lift materials and constructing bamboo scaffolding for safe access to the wall. The fort, known for the historic battle of 1659 between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan, features observation towers, a temple dedicated to the Bhonsales’ family deity, and a statue of Shivaji Maharaj.
In addition to the wall, efforts are being made to restore the path to the Bhavani temple and develop a heritage center. The government has allocated ₹127 crore for the project, highlighting its commitment to preserving the fort.
Historians and experts believe that the restoration will not only educate future generations about their heritage but also boost tourism and the local economy. The fort, with its rich history and natural beauty, is a treasure for visitors and scholars alike. The ongoing conservation efforts aim to secure its legacy for the future.
