In a bid to improve slum rehabilitation efforts, the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has unveiled plans to build transit camps in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad with the help of private partners. This move is aimed at addressing a major hurdle in the slum redevelopment process – the lack of temporary housing for displaced residents during construction projects.
Transit camps play a crucial role in providing temporary shelter for slum dwellers while their communities are being rebuilt. The absence of such facilities has often led to delays and setbacks in rehabilitation efforts.
The SRA has put out a call for tenders to construct 300-square-foot apartments on one-acre plots in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Each plot is expected to house around 400 to 450 units, with a total of 800 to 900 apartments planned across both cities. Once completed, this initiative aims to provide 2,000 transit camp apartments for the SRA to utilize.
Landowners who participate in the project will receive Transferable Development Rights (TDR) for the land they contribute, allowing them to develop projects elsewhere. Additionally, they will be compensated with Amenity TDR for the construction work carried out, creating a mutually beneficial arrangement.
The SRA’s decision to construct transit camps marks a significant step forward in meeting the housing needs of slum residents during the rehabilitation process. By offering temporary accommodation, this initiative is expected to speed up the redevelopment timeline and help complete numerous stalled projects, ultimately benefiting the affected communities.
