Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has assured that the proposed Pune-Nashik railway line will be realigned to avoid any interference with the operations of the prestigious Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Khodad. This decision comes after concerns were raised about the potential impact on GMRT’s sensitive equipment.
Vaishnaw emphasized the significance of GMRT as a national and global scientific treasure, highlighting its role in detecting gravitational waves and conducting various astrophysical studies. The railways are currently exploring two realignment options to minimize disruption to GMRT operations.
One of the proposed routes involves running parallel to an existing line, while the other option includes constructing a high-speed rail link from Nashik to Shirdi. Vaishnaw made it clear that relocating GMRT was not a viable solution and that adjustments would be made to ensure the railway line does not interfere with its operations.
The scientific community has welcomed the minister’s commitment to preserving GMRT’s integrity. Officials from the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) expressed readiness to explore alternative alignments that would not compromise GMRT’s work. Renowned physicist Naresh Dadhich also lauded the government’s decision, emphasizing the importance of GMRT in advancing scientific research in astrophysics and cosmology.
