Residents and pedestrians in Shivajinagar are fed up with the increasing harassment they face from individuals consuming alcohol on the sidewalks near a wine shop at the entrance of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Building. Despite regulations only permitting the sale of alcohol, the shop is reportedly selling empty glasses and food items, allowing on-site drinking to take place.

Authorities were expected to crack down on public drinking near wine shops, but it seems they are turning a blind eye to the issue. From 6 PM to 10 PM daily, drinkers can be seen openly consuming alcohol in various spots around the area, with food vendors also setting up shop nearby to cater to them.

Residents are shocked at the lack of police intervention, especially since this is all happening right at the entrance of the municipal corporation. One resident stated, “Wine shops and bars routinely violate regulations. They are only permitted to sell alcohol, but they sell other items as well. Every morning, the streets are littered with empty bottles from the previous night’s drinking.”

A local female resident expressed her concern about the foul odor on the streets and sidewalks, saying she feels unsafe walking in the area during the evening. Senior Police Inspector Chandrasekhar Sawant, in charge of the Shivajinagar Police Station, reassured the public that “Regular action is ongoing, and further action will be taken.”
