Pune residents were left in the lurch as the public Wi-Fi service, a key component of the Pune Smart City initiative, suddenly came to a halt. Launched in 2018, the service provided free internet access at 150 public locations, including the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) headquarters.
The service, which offered 50 MB of free data at a speed of 512 kbps after logging in with a mobile number, was especially valuable for students preparing for exams like UPSC and MPSC, as well as college students needing internet access for their studies.
However, the service was abruptly suspended due to the non-payment of dues to the private company providing the service. This has caused inconvenience for visitors to the PMC headquarters, who are now unable to complete tasks that require internet access.
PMC officials have assured the public that steps are being taken to resolve the issue. A new service provider will be appointed soon, and the Wi-Fi service will be restored once a new contract is finalized.
The suspension of the public Wi-Fi service is a setback for Pune’s digital ambitions, as the PMC aims to transform the city into a fully digital hub. The public has expressed concerns over the lack of internet access, but the PMC has promised that the service will be reinstated once a new contract is secured.
