Hey Pune peeps, have you heard about the ‘Green Farewell’ campaign initiated by the Pune Air Action Hub? They’re encouraging residents to opt for electric or gas cremation options instead of traditional wood-burning methods. Did you know that 5 to 6 crore trees are chopped down annually in India just for cremation wood? That’s a lot of trees!
In Pune, there are around 855 cremations every month, with 373 using wood pyres. But hey, there are 371 electric cremations and 172 gas-powered ones happening too. The use of wood for cremation not only leads to deforestation but also releases harmful pollutants. Yikes!
Shweta Vernekar, a member of the Pune Air Action Hub, shared that electric and gas cremation options are way better for the environment. They reduce harmful emissions like Particulate Matter, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides. Plus, they’re safer for public health and our forests.
The ‘Green Farewell’ campaign is all about spreading awareness about cleaner cremation options. They want to make electric and gas cremation facilities more accessible across all wards in Pune. Residents can easily sign up online and get an online certificate to share with their family members.
Vandan Chavan, a former Rajya Sabha member, is totally on board with the campaign. He believes it’s essential to raise awareness about eco-friendly cremation alternatives. Dr. Swapnil Kulkarni, a pulmonologist, highlighted the health risks of wood emissions, which are worse than diesel emissions. Scary stuff!
The Pune Municipal Corporation is taking action too. They’re implementing Air Pollution Control systems for wood pyres and planning to establish more electric and gas crematoria. It’s all about promoting sustainable practices in end-of-life rituals.
So, let’s support the ‘Green Farewell’ campaign and make eco-friendly cremation the new norm in Pune. It’s time to take care of our environment and our health. Let’s make a positive change together!
