Hey Pune folks, did you notice the haze in the air after all those Diwali fireworks? Well, turns out the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Pune shot up to 115 after Lakshmi Puja celebrations yesterday. Yikes!
Typically, we see better air quality during the rainy season, but post-monsoon, things start to get a bit dusty. Add in the emissions from those festive firecrackers, and boom – we’re looking at a decline in air quality. According to the experts, an AQI of up to 50 is safe, but once it hits 100, it’s considered moderate and can be bothersome for sensitive groups.
After all the fireworks on Friday night, the city and its suburbs were blanketed in smoke. The air quality, which was okay in the morning, took a nosedive by the evening. Specific readings showed AQI levels of 175 in Katraj, 158 in Bhumkarnagar, 137 at Savitribai Phule Pune University, and 111 in Shivajinagar.
The SAFAR system is warning us that the effects of all those fireworks aren’t going away anytime soon. So, take care of yourselves, Pune, and maybe consider celebrating with a little less smoke next time.
