Good news for property owners in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad! Both municipal corporations have proposed a zero property tax hike for the upcoming financial year 2025-26. This decision comes as a relief amidst the challenges faced by residents in terms of civic services and infrastructure.
In a recent standing committee meeting, the municipal commissioner in Pimpri Chinchwad approved the proposal for no increase in property tax rates. The Pune Municipal Corporation is also expected to follow suit and gain approval for the same.
With municipal elections delayed, the municipal commissioners are managing both civic bodies for the third consecutive year, presenting the annual budget.
In Pimpri Chinchwad, the focus is on improving tax revenue collection by targeting tax defaulters and identifying previously unregistered properties. PCMC has not raised property taxes since 2013-14 and collected nearly Rs 977 crore in revenue from property taxes last year.
Similarly, the Pune Municipal Corporation has proposed no tax hike for the upcoming fiscal year, pending approval from the relevant authorities.
While residents appreciate the freeze on property taxes, concerns about civic infrastructure, such as water supply and road quality, persist. Dattatray Deshmukh, chairman of the Pimpri Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Societies Federation, highlights the need for improvements in these areas, especially since taxes in PCMC are comparatively higher.
The proposal for new tax rates must be approved by both standing committee and general body meetings before February 20, as per municipal rules. It is essential for the civic bodies to address infrastructure concerns to ensure comprehensive urban development, despite the temporary relief provided by the tax freeze.
