Residents in the Balewadi and Baner areas, both part of the Smart City initiative, are facing a growing water crisis despite being tagged as smart cities. Issues such as low-pressure water supply, unscheduled releases, and supply disparities have been plaguing the residents. Ashok Joshi, a resident, expressed concerns over the lack of adequate and uninterrupted water supply in the area.
The Balewadi Welfare Forum (BWF) reported that the demand for water in Balewadi and surrounding areas is around 8 MLD, but PMC is only supplying 6 MLD, with nearly 30% of the supply being unaccounted for due to leakages. This shortfall, along with leakages in the system, is aggravating the water crisis in the area.
PMC officials have assured residents that site visits will be conducted within a week and immediate solutions will be provided for the issues at hand. The key challenges identified by residents and the BWF include insufficient water supply, frequent disruptions leading to reliance on water tankers, and ageing infrastructure causing leaks and pipeline bursts.
Residents are hopeful that PMC’s efforts will bring a permanent solution to the water crisis in the area and ensure adequate and uninterrupted water supply for all.
