Pune is currently in the midst of what locals are calling the “October Heat,” with temperatures soaring and the sun beating down relentlessly. From 1 PM to 4 PM, the heat is at its peak, driving residents to seek relief in cool beverages like sherbet, buttermilk, and ice cream.
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Pune, warning residents to brace themselves for the intense heat wave that is expected to last for the next four days.
The drop in air pressure has slowed down wind speeds, creating a stifling and uncomfortable atmosphere in the city. Despite the official temperature being 33°C, residents are reporting feeling like it’s closer to 40°C due to the urban heat island effect caused by concrete roads and glass buildings.
With low humidity and stagnant air, Punekars are feeling the heat more intensely, especially during the afternoon hours. Many are resorting to wearing protective gear such as hats, sunglasses, and umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun.
Senior meteorologist, Dr. Ramchandra Sable, explained that the drop in air pressure has altered local wind patterns, leading to increased solar radiation. He warned that the effects of the October heat are likely to persist until November before the winter chill sets in by December.
In the meantime, residents are advised to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun to stay safe during this intense heat wave in Pune.
