Hey Pune peeps, it’s time to talk about the air quality situation in our city. Unfortunately, things are not looking great as we head into winter.

One of the main contributors to the worsening air quality is traffic emissions. Yep, all those cars and buses on the road are pumping out pollutants that are making our air less than ideal. But that’s not all – open garbage burning is also a big problem. And as if that wasn’t enough, stagnant air as winter approaches is not helping the situation either.

Surprisingly, even areas with typically lower traffic congestion, like Katraj Dairy, are experiencing high pollution levels due to open burning and local activities. And with Diwali right around the corner, things are expected to get even worse. The mix of celebrations on November 1 and 2 will likely have a lasting impact on air quality, especially during the night.

To make matters worse, Pune’s nighttime temperatures have been on the rise. On October 31, the nighttime low was a whopping 20.4°C, which is 4.6 degrees above normal. And during the day, temperatures soared to 33°C. But don’t worry, there’s some hope on the horizon. Light rainfall is expected on November 1, which could help bring some relief and improve air quality to a more moderate level.

So, what can we do to protect ourselves during this time? Well, it’s important to stay informed about air quality levels, especially during Diwali peak hours. Keeping an eye on the situation can help us make smart choices to protect our health and the environment.

Stay safe, Pune! And let’s all do our part to keep our air clean and healthy.
