Residents of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad are frustrated with the toll charges at Khed Shivapur, demanding a toll-free pass for vehicles traveling only 25 km out of the total 80 km stretch. The calls for equitable toll charges have gained momentum, with citizens feeling unjustly burdened by toll fees for such a short distance.
The demand for toll waivers has been strongly advocated by residents, who argue that it is unreasonable to impose toll charges for journeys of just 25 km. The toll collection for vehicles traveling from Sinhagad Road – Bhor phata to Khed Shivapur has been particularly contentious, leading to calls for immediate action to address the perceived inequality.
Political figures, including Dhananjay Benkar, the Aam Aadmi Party’s City President, have joined the cause, urging the National Highways Authority of India to grant concessions to vehicles with 14 licenses. Benkar, along with Mauli Darwatkar of the Toll Naka Hatav Action Committee and other AAP members, have warned of protests if their demands are not met promptly.
Despite the mounting pressure from citizens and political representatives, authorities have not yet responded to the issue. There have been no official directives or announcements regarding toll waivers, leaving residents disappointed with the lack of action.
Concerns remain about the significant difference between toll charges and the actual distance traveled, with a local pass costing Rs 330 offering a 20 km exemption. The responsibility for toll collection lies with Pune Toll Road Pvt. Ltd, led by Amit Bhatia, further raising questions about the fairness of the tolling system.
