Residents and activists are up in arms over the Pune Municipal Corporation’s plan to cut down trees in the city. They are criticizing the lack of alternative solutions to preserve the green cover and the unscientific methods being used to determine the age of the trees. At a recent hearing, over 20 citizens, including well-known activists and a lawyer, voiced their objections to the plan.
One of the major concerns raised by citizens is that the PMC has already allowed road digging without taking any protective measures for the tree roots. They are also worried that there are no plans in place for replantation or conservation. The lack of a method to determine tree age, despite a directive from the National Green Tribunal, has further fueled the residents’ anger.
Activists are demanding written refusals for the current dockets to prevent automatic approvals and are pushing for alternative plans to replant the felled trees nearby. They are particularly concerned about the narrow footpaths that would leave little space for pedestrians and new trees.
The activists have also warned of more trees being cut down in various parts of the city, which they believe is contributing to the rising temperatures. They are calling for immediate action to stop the unchecked tree cutting and preserve Pune’s green cover.
