Rickshaws in Pune have long been a popular mode of transportation for quick and convenient travel. However, recent reports have surfaced of some drivers tampering with meters, leading to passengers being overcharged for their journeys. It seems that some rickshaws in the city have malfunctioning meters, causing fares to skyrocket well beyond the regulated rate of ₹25 per kilometre.
When questioned about these discrepancies, many drivers seem to dodge the issue or simply ignore passenger concerns. Frustrated with the situation, passengers are now calling on the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Pune to crack down on these dishonest drivers.
To safeguard themselves against overcharging, passengers are advised to keep a close eye on the meter throughout their journey, compare the distance travelled with the displayed fare, and request a meter check if anything seems off. It’s also recommended to take clear photographs of the meter as evidence in case a complaint needs to be filed with local transport authorities.
In response to these complaints, auto union representatives have assured that action will be taken against drivers found guilty of tampering with meters or overcharging passengers. They encourage passengers to use the helpline for a quick response to any grievances they may have.
RTO Officer Vishnu Ghode has emphasized that cracking down on irregularities in auto meters is a top priority. He urges citizens to report any suspicious activity and cooperate with the authorities to ensure a fair and transparent system. If passengers notice any issues with the meter, they are advised to take a photo and send it to the provided toll-free number or call to inform officials about the problem.
For those experiencing issues with rickshaw drivers, a helpline number (112) has been set up for complaints. Additionally, passengers who face misbehaviour or harassment, especially women, are encouraged to call 1091 for assistance.
It’s clear that steps are being taken to address the issue of meter tampering in Pune, and passengers are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any irregularities they encounter during their rickshaw rides.
