Hey Pune folks, here’s some news that might make you feel a little better about your bank account situation!
So, this guy Mahesh Shejwal from Charholi had a bit of a nightmare situation at the ATM in January 2017. He tried to withdraw Rs. 10,000 from the Bank of Maharashtra ATM at the Pune Municipal Corporation Main Building, but the money never came out. However, the amount was deducted from his account. Talk about frustrating, right?
Now, according to the rules set by the Reserve Bank of India, the bank should have credited the deducted amount back to Mahesh’s account within twelve working days. But guess what? They didn’t. So Mahesh did what any sensible person would do and filed a complaint with the bank. But even after following up multiple times, the bank claimed they found no issues with the ATM.
Not one to give up easily, Mahesh then took his complaint to the Pune Consumer Grievance Redressal Commission. And boy, did they come through for him! The commission ordered the Bank of Maharashtra’s Vishrantwadi branch to pay Mahesh Rs 39,500 as compensation. That breaks down to Rs 33,500 for the 335 days from 20th January 2017 to 20th December 2017, at the rate of Rs 100 per day. Plus, he got an extra Rs 5,000 for the mental distress caused and another Rs 1,000 for filing the complaint.
Kudos to Chairman Anil B. Jawalekar, Member Sarita N. Patil, and Shubhangi J. Dunakhe for making sure justice was served in this case. Here’s hoping this serves as a reminder for banks to take their customers’ complaints seriously!
