Pune Police have decided to delay the enforcement of the new helmet mandate that requires both riders and pillion passengers to wear helmets. The decision came after discussions with various stakeholders and the need for public awareness campaigns to address concerns and promote safety compliance.
The directive, issued by the Additional Director General of Police (Traffic) earlier this week, aimed to expand helmet enforcement to include pillion passengers. The Pune traffic police had updated their e-challan systems to issue fines to pillion riders, but faced resistance to immediate implementation.
Commissioner Amitesh Kumar emphasized the collaborative approach taken, involving administrative agencies, social organizations, and public representatives in the decision-making process. The focus is on educating the public about the importance of helmets in reducing fatalities and injuries in road accidents.
The postponement of the mandate highlights the urgency of promoting road safety in Pune. The police aim to ensure effective implementation by engaging with diverse groups and raising awareness about the life-saving benefits of wearing helmets.
With the new enforcement date set for January, Pune residents are encouraged to prioritize their safety and comply with the helmet mandate for a safer commuting experience.
