As the assembly elections approach, the district of Pune is taking proactive measures to maintain peace and security. Collector and District Magistrate Dr Suhas Diwase has issued an order for the surrender of 3,761 weapons from licensed arms holders across the district, encompassing 33 police stations in rural areas.

The goal of this directive is to prevent any misuse of arms or ammunition and to ensure the safety of the public and their property during this crucial time. Concerns about potential disturbances and riots have prompted this action.

The breakdown of weapons to be surrendered by each police station is as follows: Baramati City Police Station: 210, Baramati Taluka: 149, Malegaon: 147, Vadgaon Nimbalkar: 147, and so on across the various stations.

During a recent meeting of the Scrutiny Committee, various factors were considered, including individuals on bail, involvement in riots, and the potential political misuse of weapons. The order also takes into account the influence of certain individuals in local communities who may be involved in the electoral process or political gatherings.

The police department has been tasked with informing all arms license holders about the order and ensuring the safe return of the weapons once the deposit period is over. Failure to comply with this directive will result in legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita (BNS).

Overall, these measures are aimed at promoting a peaceful and secure environment during the upcoming assembly elections in Pune.
