Hey there, Pune! So, it looks like the District and Sessions Court in our city is really feeling the pressure lately. With almost 7 lakh pending cases on their plate, it’s safe to say they have their work cut out for them.

The backlog of cases started piling up during the COVID-19 pandemic, and even though it’s been over three years since then, there hasn’t been much of a dent made in the number of pending cases. The lack of human resources, especially police staff for judicial work, is really making things difficult for the court to operate smoothly.

In Shivajinagar District and Sessions Court alone, there are over 6.94 lakh pending cases, with civil cases making up 1.81 lakh and criminal cases at a whopping 5.12 lakh. And it’s not just Pune that’s facing this issue – courts across Maharashtra are dealing with a total of 54.16 lakh pending cases, with civil cases at 16.94 lakh and criminal cases at 37.22 lakh.

Efforts like Fast Track Courts and Lok Adalats have been put in place to try and tackle this backlog, but it seems like there’s still a long way to go. The central government has also raised concerns about the backlog of citizen grievances in Maharashtra, highlighting a larger problem with addressing legal and administrative issues in the state.

So, it looks like our courts have their work cut out for them. Let’s hope they can find a way to clear up this backlog and get things back on track soon. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story!
