Hey Pune peeps, big news coming your way! The District and Sessions Court in Pune is all set to expand with the addition of 15,000 sq ft of space in the multi-modal hub of the metro being built at the government warehouse in Shivajinagar. The government has given the green light for this expansion with a whopping fund of Rs 15,04,59,000.

The idea to expand the court space was discussed way back in February 2015 between the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and the Chief Minister. It was decided then to acquire the warehouse space near the court for this purpose. Initially under the Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Protection, the space was later handed over to Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation.

In a subsequent meeting on 24 June 2017, Supreme Court Justice Abhay Oak and Mahametro officials finalized plans to allocate 15,000 square feet of space to the District and Sessions Court, complete with parking, in the upcoming multi-modal hub of the Metro.

However, Metro authorities have requested a payment of Rs 15 crores at the time of space transfer, or the market value at the time of transfer. The construction plan and map of the space must also be submitted to the government and the High Court. Once the transfer is complete, the District Court will need to register the space through the district collector.

President of the Pune Bar Association, Adv Santosh Khamkar, has assured that they will be requesting the High Court to approve the use of this warehouse space for courts and lawyers. The PBA will be closely following up on this matter. Exciting times ahead for the legal fraternity in Pune!
