The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections have stirred up controversy in Pune district, with 11 candidates filing vote recount applications due to concerns over the accuracy of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). These unsuccessful candidates are seeking verification of the results in various constituencies, including Hadapsar where Prashant Jagtap of the Nationalist Congress Party paid a whopping ₹12.74 lakh for the recount process.
The surprising defeats of prominent candidates in the recent elections have raised questions about the reliability of the EVMs used. As a result, recount requests have been made in Hadapsar, Pune Cantonment, Shirur, and Khadakwasla constituencies.
The recount process involves paying ₹40,000 per EVM, along with 18% GST, and conducting a 5% recount of polling stations. Test votes are cast on recount day to ensure the accuracy of the machine’s recording, as per Election Commission guidelines.
With EVM data preserved for 45 days post-election, the district administration will now submit a report to the Chief Electoral Officer for further review and decision-making on the recount applications. This scrutiny of election results highlights the growing concern among candidates and the public regarding election transparency and fairness in Pune.
