As Ganeshotsav approaches, Punekars in Pune are gearing up for a more environmentally friendly celebration this year. Instead of the traditional Ganesha idols made from plaster of paris, many are opting for eco-friendly alternatives. Recently, a workshop was held where participants crafted their own Ganesha idols using sustainable materials.

The workshop, organized by Reema Gupta of Sprinkles & Splash in collaboration with Sharayu Bobade of Sharayu_arts, brought together a diverse group of people eager to create their own eco-friendly Ganesha idols. Participants had the opportunity to mold clay into intricate and beautiful Ganesha figures, embracing tradition and creativity.

One participant, Divyesh Pitroda, shared how making the Ganesha idol with his daughter was a bonding experience. Another participant, Asha Shashidharan, expressed excitement about starting a new family tradition with her father creating a Ganesha for the first time. Dr. Vaishnavi Chandak found the creative process therapeutic and plans to make it a yearly hobby.

Using Bombay clay, or shadu mati, for crafting the idols, the workshop emphasized sustainability and community engagement. Participants were fully engaged in the process, from forming the structure to adding details like modak and ornaments. The team member, Siddhi Sadekar, highlighted the therapeutic benefits of working with clay, allowing participants to focus, create, and find joy in the artistic process.

By promoting the use of eco-friendly materials, fostering community engagement, and providing personal fulfillment and therapeutic benefits, Punekars are not only celebrating tradition but also taking a step towards a greener future.
