The Pune Excise Department has been cracking down on clubs in the area, with 32 establishments facing action in the last two days. Club owners are expressing frustration, claiming they are being unfairly targeted for minor infractions. This sudden enforcement comes after criticism from Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, prompting stricter measures.
One incident that sparked this crackdown was a minor driving a Porsche after partying at two pubs in Koregaon Park, resulting in a collision with two IT engineers. Following the incident, Fadnavis visited Pune to review the response from the police and excise departments.
State Excise Department officials have been conducting inspections and filing cases at various locations, particularly targeting bars selling liquor purchased from wine shops. An establishment in Viman Nagar has been sealed for serving alcohol to minors.
There are concerns that the enforcement actions may be superficial, as details about the extent of the crackdown are not being disclosed. Additionally, highway dhabas and city hotels are reportedly selling liquor without the necessary licenses, raising further issues for the Excise Department.
