Market Yard in Pune is facing a significant price hike in fruits and vegetables due to the harsh heat and pre-monsoon rains. The cultivation has been impacted, resulting in a decrease in imports to the market. Prices have risen by 10 to 20% across all types of vegetables.

The arrivals of fruits and vegetables at the wholesale market have been unusually low, with only 80 to 90 truckloads arriving on Sunday. This scarcity in supply has led to a price increase, as reported by a senior agent at the Market Yard.

The recent intermittent rains have worsened the situation, causing losses in cultivation and delaying new planting by at least one to one and a half months. This is expected to further drive up prices in the coming weeks.

Current prices per kilogram for various vegetables are soaring, with onions and potatoes priced at 40 to 45 rupees, tomatoes at 70 to 80 rupees, and okra at 120 to 140 rupees. Leafy vegetables like coriander and fenugreek are also seeing a surge in prices, with coriander priced at 50 to 60 rupees per bouquet and fenugreek at 40 to 50 rupees.

Vegetable sellers attribute the price hikes to adverse weather conditions, which have affected both supply and quality. They anticipate that prices will continue to rise unless planting conditions improve.

Traders expect the prices of fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens to remain elevated throughout the month, as the combination of adverse weather conditions and reduced supply continues to impact both consumers and traders.
