The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) fire brigade is facing challenges due to an aging fleet and an expanding jurisdiction. With only 22 vehicles and 5 tankers in operation, the brigade is struggling to meet the needs of Pune’s 60 lakh residents.
To address these issues, the fire brigade has proposed a budget of ₹24 crore for modern firefighting vehicles. This includes acquiring high-capacity vehicles capable of reaching up to 15–16 floors, multi-purpose vehicles with advanced capabilities, and a compact vehicle for narrow alleys and slums.
With an average of 200–225 fires per month, the fire brigade needs to upgrade its fleet to effectively respond to emergencies. The retirement of 27 vehicles has halved their capacity, highlighting the urgent need for modernization.
Efforts are also underway to establish additional fire stations in central and suburban areas. However, challenges such as limited space, manpower, and vehicle availability must be addressed to enhance the brigade’s response capabilities.
The proposal for modern firefighting vehicles is a crucial step in ensuring the safety of Pune’s residents. By investing in new equipment and focusing on high-rise buildings and densely populated areas, the fire brigade aims to meet the city’s evolving needs and effectively combat fire incidents.
