Hey there, folks of Pune! It seems like our fire brigade is really feeling the heat lately with all the fire incidents popping up left and right. With a whopping 27 fire brigade vehicles out of commission, our firefighters are working extra hard with only 22 vehicles and 5 tankers to respond to emergencies in our vast city.
To tackle this shortage, the PMC has put forth a proposal of ₹24 crore to buy new vehicles. And get this – five of these vehicles will be able to spray water up to 15 to 16 floors, perfect for those pesky high-rise fires.
With Pune’s area expanding and an increase in population, setting up new fire stations in both central areas and suburbs has become a top priority. However, it’s not as easy as it sounds – it takes space, manpower, and of course, vehicles to get these stations up and running.
Speaking of vehicles, did you know that for a city of 60 lakh people like Pune, we should ideally have one fire vehicle for every 1 lakh residents? But currently, we only have 20 fire stations, leaving us short-handed when it comes to responding to fires in places like warehouses, garbage piles, and even on hills during wildfires.
And with an average of 200 to 225 fires happening every month, our firefighters definitely have their work cut out for them. Major fires often require multiple vehicles to respond, which means careful planning by the fire brigade is essential.
But fear not, Puneites! Our fire brigade is not sitting idle. They’re modernizing and increasing manpower to meet the city’s growing needs. Plans are in place to purchase new vehicles, including six multi-purpose fire vehicles and five high-rise firefighting vehicles that can spray water up to 15 to 16 floors.
Chief Fire Officer Devendra Potphode assures us that the process to procure these new vehicles is in full swing, ensuring that our firefighters have the best tools at their disposal to keep Pune safe. Stay tuned for more updates on how our fire brigade is gearing up to tackle the challenges ahead!
