The Pune forest department has recently put forth a series of proposed safety and development measures for the Tamhini and Sudhagad forest reserves. These measures come in response to recent tragic incidents that have highlighted the need for improved safety protocols in the area.

One such incident occurred on July 1, when a 38-year-old man was swept away by a waterfall in Tamhini, resulting in a 48-hour search before his body was recovered. This tragedy, along with the increasing number of visitors to the reserves, has spurred the forest department into action.

The proposed safety measures include the installation of safety barriers around waterfalls, the construction of eco-friendly bridges over small water streams, the placement of informative signs to guide visitors on safety precautions, and the establishment of security cabins at entrance points to offer assistance to tourists.

These measures will be implemented through a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, with support from the ICICI Foundation. Work is expected to commence after the monsoon season, with Tushar Chavan, Deputy Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) at the Pune Forest Department, stressing the importance of sustainable and responsible tourism practices in areas like Tamhini and Sudhagad.

Snehal Patil, District Forest Officer and Project Incharge, mentioned that a detailed proposal for the measures is in the works, and potential additions to safety and tourism protocols are being considered.

The timeline for implementation is set for post-monsoon, with collaboration from the ICICI Foundation and the Pune Forest Department. The focus areas of the initiative include safety measures, eco-friendly infrastructure, and visitor guidance, all aimed at ensuring that the natural beauty of Tamhini and Sudhagad can be enjoyed safely by all visitors.
