Hey Pune folks, have you heard about the recent crackdown on government employees violating helmet rules in the city? Well, the Pune Traffic Department has been keeping a close eye on key government offices, and they found that 169 government employees have been flouting the helmet rule over the past two months.
Which offices have been caught breaking the rules, you ask? The Divisional Commissioner’s Office, Pune Collector’s Office, Pune Municipal Corporation, Pune Zilla Parishad, Pune City RTO, and other state government offices within city limits have all been on the radar.
The violations don’t stop there – 121 cases were reported until the end of November, with an additional 48 cases popping up in December. And these cases are just a drop in the bucket, as Pune saw a total of 4,000 violations during the same period.
In response to these violations, the traffic department has taken strict measures and notified the government offices to take action against the offenders. Repeat violators could face penalties, including negative entries in their service books as per the Motor Vehicles Act and Maharashtra Civil Services Rules.
This crackdown comes after concerns were raised by Retired Justice Abhay Sapre about the low compliance with helmet regulations in Pune. The goal is to set an example for the public and promote road safety awareness among government employees.
While some employees have started wearing helmets regularly after being caught, there are still challenges to ensuring long-term compliance. Civic activist Vivek Velankar pointed out the need for sustained efforts and a cultural shift towards road safety awareness.
Moving forward, the Pune Traffic Department plans to expand monitoring efforts, enhance awareness campaigns, and implement stringent penalties to ensure that helmet compliance becomes a permanent part of Pune’s road safety culture. It’s great to see the authorities taking road safety seriously, but only time will tell if these efforts will lead to lasting change.
