It’s been a hot topic in Maharashtra lately – the fluctuating onion prices that have been causing distress among farmers. But fear not, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution has stepped in to address the issue.

Starting this week, a uniform weekly rate of Rs 2,940 per quintal will be set for onion procurement in Maharashtra by NAFED and NCCF. This move comes after criticism over the previous district-wise rates that led to price differences across the state.

However, challenges still remain as market prices for good quality onions are higher than the government’s procurement rate. This has led to delays in payments and limited purchases to specific farmer groups rather than benefiting all farmers.

Advocates like Kuber Jadhav and Bharat Dighole are calling for fairer procurement processes and broader measures to address inflation beyond just focusing on onion prices. It seems like the onion saga in Maharashtra is far from over, but at least steps are being taken to stabilize the situation.
