Get ready to crank up the air conditioning and break out the summer wardrobe, folks, because Pune is about to turn up the heat! According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures in the city and surrounding areas are expected to hit a scorching 40°C in the coming days.
The IMD officials are blaming the clear skies and the lack of northern wind influences for the sudden spike in temperatures. Areas like Koregaon Park and Chinchwad are gearing up for what could be their hottest days of the season so far, with daytime temperatures already rising by 3-4°C in the past few weeks.
A senior IMD official has warned that without any active weather systems or cool northerly winds, Pune could very well reach that dreaded 40°C mark sooner rather than later. While we might see some clouds in the afternoons, overall conditions are expected to remain dry and toasty.
Over in Shivajinagar, temperatures have already hit 37.5°C, while Lohegaon is not far behind at 38.5°C. This is a significant increase from the normal temperatures, with Lohegaon even hitting 39.5°C over the weekend. And it’s not just Pune feeling the heat – regions like Marathwada and Vidarbha are also experiencing record-breaking temperatures.
While parts of Konkan have already been issued heatwave warnings, the rest of Maharashtra is not quite there yet. To be classified as a heatwave, temperatures need to be at least 4.5°C above normal levels, and so far, only Konkan has met that criteria. However, reports of heat stroke cases in places like Nanded, Thane, and Jalna are a cause for concern.
The rising temperatures are not just uncomfortable – they could also have serious consequences on water supply and agriculture in the region. Parbhani in Marathwada and Akola in Vidarbha are already feeling the heat, with temperatures soaring well above normal levels.
Experts are pointing to urban heat island effects and climate change as the main culprits behind the rising temperatures. With no relief in sight, it’s important for citizens to stay hydrated, seek shade, and take other necessary precautions to stay cool and safe in this scorching weather.
