Hey there, folks! If you thought summer was still a few weeks away, think again because Pune just experienced its hottest day of the season on Wednesday. Temperatures soared to a scorching 40.2°C in Lohgaon and Koregaon Park, with several other areas in the region also hitting the 40°C mark. Yikes!

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave warnings across multiple states, with Gujarat being on red alert. Officials are warning of a “very high likelihood of heat-related illnesses and heatstroke across all age groups.” Similar warnings have been issued for Konkan and Vidarbha in Maharashtra and southwest Rajasthan. Stay cool, everyone!

So, what’s causing this intense heatwave, you ask? According to S.D. Sanap, a scientist at IMD Pune, it’s all thanks to a high-pressure system over Gujarat and surrounding areas. This system is causing air subsidence, trapping heat near the surface and preventing cloud formation. No wonder Gujarat has been consistently recording temperatures above 40°C!

Multiple locations in the Pune region, including Rajgurunagar, Shirur, and Dhamdhere, have also crossed the 40°C mark. In Maharashtra, temperatures have been 1-2°C above normal, while Gujarat is seeing an increase of 2-3°C. It’s getting hot in here!

In Maharashtra, cities like Akola, Chandrapur, and Nagpur have recorded above-normal temperatures, while Gujarat remains the hottest state with cities like Rajkot and Amreli hitting some seriously high numbers. Stay hydrated, folks!

IMD officials have issued health warnings, urging vulnerable groups to avoid prolonged sun exposure and stay hydrated. Gujarat is under a red alert, with authorities advising “extreme caution” due to the dangerous heat levels. Relief is expected soon, with temperatures likely to drop in some areas starting Thursday. Hang in there, everyone! Stay cool, stay safe.
