Hey folks, it looks like Pune is facing a bit of a water shortage situation. The Khadakwasla chain of dams, which includes dams like Khadakwasla, Temghar, Panshet, and Varasgaon, is currently only at 14 per cent of its storage capacity. Yikes!

The catchment areas of these dams haven’t been getting much rain, which means there hasn’t been any increase in water storage. While the monsoon has arrived, it’s been pretty weak so far. On the bright side, Pune city and a few other areas have been getting some much-needed rain.

Since June 5, Pune has seen 206 mm of rainfall, which is actually higher than the average for this time of year. It’s about 135 per cent of the usual amount. The total capacity of the Khadakwasla system is 29.15 TMC, but right now, the dams are only at 4.71 TMC.

Last year, the dams were filled up somehow, but this year, it doesn’t look like they’ll be able to reach their full capacity. In fact, the current storage levels are the lowest they’ve been in the past five years. It’s definitely time to start thinking about how to manage the water supply for agriculture, evaporation, and the city’s needs.

The weather forecast doesn’t look too promising either. It’s expected to be warm with not much rain in sight for the next month or so. Last year at this time, the storage was at 5.48 TMC, which was about 18.78 per cent of the total capacity. The IMD is predicting that Pune district will get 100 per cent of its annual average rainfall.

Overall, it seems like the whole country is in for a decent amount of rain this year, but for now, it’s important to use the water in the dams wisely. Let’s keep an eye on the situation and hope for some more rain in the coming weeks! Stay hydrated, Pune!
