Shivajinagar, 18th December 2024: If you’ve been driving along Pune’s Jangali Maharaj Road (JM Road) recently, you may have noticed a rather large surprise – a giant pothole! This is quite unexpected, considering JM Road is usually known for its smooth and pothole-free surface.
A few years back, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) invested a significant amount of money to repair and maintain JM Road. However, it seems that all that effort has gone to waste as a massive pothole has now appeared due to the collapse of the drainage system underneath the road.
The PMC had constructed a rainwater drain on JM Road about two years ago at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore. Unfortunately, this drain has now caved in, causing a substantial hole in the road. The PMC Road Department promptly assessed the situation and discovered that the ground around the drain had sunk by more than five feet. In response, the road was closed off, and repair work commenced immediately.
The problematic pothole is located in front of the Shubham Pure Veg Restaurant on JM Road. As soon as the issue was identified, a team from the PMC Road Department rushed to the scene with their road repair vehicle. Upon investigation, it was found that the rainwater drain had collapsed internally. For safety reasons, the area was cordoned off, and repair work kicked off without delay.
The appearance of this pothole has had a significant impact on traffic in the area. JM Road is a crucial thoroughfare that connects various important locations in Shivajinagar, such as Deccan, Fergusson College Road (FC Road), and the PMC Building. It also serves as a vital route to Kothrud, Swargate, and other key areas. Given the high number of restaurants, hotels, and offices along JM Road, the increased traffic congestion caused by the pothole has become a major headache for commuters.
The PMC is working tirelessly to address the issue and restore JM Road to its former glory. Until then, motorists are advised to exercise caution while navigating this popular stretch of road.
