Pune has emerged as a hotspot for bird watching, with over 200 birders generating a record number of ‘checklists’ during the recent Great Backyard Bird Count. The city leads the State with 3,661 checklists, far ahead of other cities.

For those unfamiliar with the term, a ‘checklist’ is a record of bird sightings made by individuals or groups within a specific time frame in a particular area. The GBBC, organized by Cornell University and the Audubon Society, saw Pune birders spotting birds in locations like Vetal Tekdi, Pashan Lake, and Mahatma Tekdi using apps like ‘eBird’ and Merlin.

City-based environmentalists Ranjeet Rane and Sumiti Saharan shared data from eBird, revealing that Pune recorded 284 bird species, ranking second in the State after Sindhudurg. Maharashtra as a whole recorded 418 species, the fourth highest in India.

Globally, Colombia leads with 1,344 bird species, while India ranks second with 1,077 species. The GBBC in Pune showcased the city’s vibrant birding community, with enthusiasts coming together to celebrate and conserve avian diversity. The event also aimed to inspire more people to connect with nature and discover the joy of birding.
