The survivor of the horrific Bopdev Ghat gang-rape case in Pune is set to receive a compensation of ₹5 lakh from the Pune District Legal Services Authority. This financial assistance comes under the ‘Manodhairya’ scheme, which aims to support victims of sexual assault and torture.
The incident took place on October 3, when a young woman was brutally gang-raped while out for a walk with a friend at Bopdev Ghat. Following the incident, two of the accused have been arrested, with one still being questioned by authorities.
The survivor wasted no time in applying for compensation under the ‘Manodhairya’ scheme, and her application was swiftly approved by the Legal Services Authority. Within nine days, her request was processed, providing her with much-needed financial relief.
Under the compensation guidelines, the survivor will receive 25% of the ₹5 lakh in cash, with the remaining 75% being deposited as a fixed deposit in a bank for a period of ten years. The interest earned from this deposit will aid in covering the survivor’s daily expenses.
The ‘Manodhairya’ scheme was established to help women and children who have been victims of sexual crimes by providing compensation ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹10 lakh. This initiative aims to offer financial support to victims and assist them in rebuilding their lives.
Pune District Legal Services Authority Secretary Sonal Patil confirmed that the survivor’s application was submitted on October 11 and resolved by October 19 under the guidance of Principal District and Sessions Judge Mahendra Mahajan.
