The Lounge & Bar Association of Pune is up in arms following a recent crackdown on liquor-licensed establishments in the city. The association has penned a letter to District Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase expressing serious concerns about the impact of the regulatory actions taken after a tragic accident in Kalyani Nagar.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, has sparked a wave of enforcement against the hospitality industry in Pune. The association pointed out that the fallout from this single event has led to the PMC demolishing establishments, social media backlash, excise filings, and license suspensions, with liquor-licensed restaurants bearing the brunt of the crackdown.
According to the association, restaurants have already been grappling with strict police regulations since February 2024, including early closures mandated by law. They argued that the recent accident has only worsened their situation, tarnishing their reputation and financial stability.
In the past few days, more than 50 liquor-licensed restaurants have had their licenses suspended, causing significant economic repercussions. The association highlighted concerns about revenue loss, permanent closures, damage to Pune’s social culture, bankruptcy threats, rising unemployment, disrupted work-life balance, and declining attractiveness for business investment.
In their letter to the district collector, the association pleaded for the suspensions to be lifted and for restaurants to be allowed to resume operations. They emphasized that the current actions are unjust and are jeopardizing the livelihoods of many.
