The Market Yard in Pune was bustling with activity on the 14th of January as the demand for fruits during Bhogi and Makar Sankranti led to a surge in prices. Ber Fruit prices shot up by 20% due to high demand, while lemons saw a more modest increase of 10% to 15%. However, other fruits remained stable in price, thanks to a balanced demand and supply situation.
On Sunday, the Market Yard received a substantial amount of fruits, including 30 to 40 tons of Sweet Lemon (Mosambi), 50 to 60 tons of Oranges, and 15 to 20 tons of Pomegranates. There were also 18 to 20 tempos of Papaya, around 2,000 sacks of Lemons, 10 to 12 tempos of Watermelon, and 5 to 6 tempos of Melons.
In addition, there were 1,000 boxes of Chiku, 300 to 400 crates of Guava, six trucks of Pineapple, two to three tons of Custard Apple (Sitafal), and a whopping 7,500 to 8,000 sacks of Ber Fruit. This influx of fruits reflected the seasonal increase in demand during the festive period.
Despite the stable prices for most fruits compared to the previous week, the festive rush caused prices to rise for popular items like Ber Fruit and Lemon. The market is expected to remain active as consumers continue to make purchases for the ongoing celebrations.
