With Diwali and Lakshmi Puja just around the corner, Market Yard in Pune is bustling with activity as sales of flowers, especially marigolds, have started to pick up. However, it seems that 70% of the flowers being sold are of poor quality this year. Despite this, prices are said to be better than last year due to high demand.

Farmers typically set aside flowers each year for Lakshmi Puja, but this year, the quality has been affected by the retreating monsoon. Only 30% of the flowers available are of good quality, with prices reaching up to ₹100 per kilogram. Nevertheless, customers and garland sellers are still showing strong interest in purchasing flowers, leading to a quick turnover.

Various parts of Pune, as well as neighboring districts such as Satara, Dharashiv, Hingoli, Mohol, and Solapur, have supplied flowers to the Market Yard. Marigold flowers, capri, chrysanthemums, asters, and tuberoses are among the popular choices for customers this year.

Chrysanthemums, in particular, have seen a decrease in production, which is unusual for this time of year. Last year, excessive rain caused damage to the flowers, resulting in lower demand and prices. In comparison, prices for flowers this year have been more favorable.

Here are the current wholesale rates for flowers per kilogram:
– Marigold: ₹70 to ₹80
– Capri: ₹80 to ₹100
– Chrysanthemum (Shevanti): ₹70 to ₹180
– Aster: ₹200 to ₹300
– Tuberose (Gulchadi): ₹200 to ₹300

Unfortunately, the recent increase in fog has caused further damage to the flowers, compounding the issues caused by the rain. This has also contributed to the declining prices in the market. Despite these challenges, the demand for flowers remains strong as customers prepare for the upcoming festive celebrations.
