The Union Budget for 2025 has set aside a whopping Rs 838.96 crore for Maha Metro’s projects in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. This significant funding injection is aimed at accelerating the extensions of the metro lines to Nigdi and Katraj, as well as completing the remaining phase-1 routes in the region. In addition, a substantial Rs 230 crore has been earmarked for the crucial Mula-Mutha pollution abatement project.

The allocation of Rs 838.96 crore will be instrumental in pushing forward the ongoing metro projects, particularly the extensions to Nigdi and Katraj. This funding, which includes contributions from both the central and state governments, will be disbursed in phases as per the requirements of the projects.

Exciting progress is already underway for the Pimpri-Nigdi extension, while the underground metro route from Swargate to Katraj is set to kick off in the near future. The existing PCMC-Swargate and Vanaz-Ramwadi routes have witnessed a commendable daily ridership of 1.6 lakh passengers as of January 2025, showcasing the growing popularity of the metro services.

In response to commuter feedback, Maha Metro is looking to enhance last-mile connectivity by introducing midi buses on shorter routes to metro stations. This move is expected to make it easier for passengers to access the metro network and boost overall ridership numbers. Additionally, plans are in place to expedite the evaluation of new metro routes to further expand the reach of the metro system.

The allocation of Rs 230 crore for the Mula-Mutha pollution abatement project underscores the government’s commitment to improving environmental conditions in the region. This funding will support the construction of sewage treatment plants (STPs), with the Pune Municipal Corporation aiming to sanction a total of 10 STPs by the end of 2025. The project will receive additional financial support from both the Centre and the state government to ensure its timely completion.

Overall, the budget allocation for metro projects and pollution control initiatives in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad signifies a significant step towards enhancing public transportation and environmental sustainability in the region. The focus now remains on efficient project execution and expanding connectivity to benefit residents and commuters alike.
