Pune is gearing up for a major metro network expansion, with plans to launch a 23.2-kilometer metro corridor in the near future. The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) has also submitted proposals for two new metro routes, Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi and Nal Stop-Warje-Manikbagh, totaling ₹9,897 crore, to the central government for approval.
The state budget announcement made by Maharashtra Finance Minister Ajit Pawar highlighted these developments, with a focus on winning over Pune’s voters before the upcoming municipal elections. The Swargate-Katraj metro line has already been given the green light, and plans are in place for further expansion into suburban areas.
With municipal elections expected to take place by Diwali after a delay of several years, the budget includes provisions for extending the metro network to accommodate the growing population. Newly incorporated areas like Khadakwasla, Kirkatwadi, Kondhwe Dhawade, Manjari, and Nanded will now have a say in the local elections, thanks to improved connectivity through the proposed metro corridors.
The planned metro routes will cover a total of 37.76 kilometers and are estimated to cost nearly ₹10,000 crore. While no entirely new metro routes are introduced in the budget, the emphasis on existing infrastructure projects suggests a strategic move to gain support in the upcoming elections. Stay tuned for more updates on Pune’s metro expansion plans!
