Pune is all set to witness a major transformation in its public transport system with the expansion of the metro network. The new routes being developed aim to provide a faster and more comfortable commuting option for the city’s residents. The successful completion of the Pimpri-Swargate and Vanaz-Ramwadi corridors has already attracted a large number of daily commuters.

According to Higher and Technical Education Minister, Chandrakant Patil, the extended metro routes will significantly improve connectivity across Pune. The expansion project is expected to ease traffic congestion on major roads like Sinhgad Road, Karve Road, and Solapur Road, providing relief to commuters.

Currently, Pune has 32 kilometers of operational metro routes, including an underground stretch from Shivajinagar to Swargate. The central government has also approved a 6-kilometer underground route connecting Swargate to Katraj. The state government has proposed extensions for the Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi and Swargate-Khadakwasla corridors.

In addition to the existing routes, new routes are under construction, such as the Pimpri-Nigdi and Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar corridors. Proposed new routes like Vanaz to Chandni Chowk, Nal Stop to Warje, and Hinjewadi to Chandni Chowk are also being considered for approval.

The expansion of the metro system is expected to reduce traffic congestion, increase accessibility, promote sustainable transportation, and save time for commuters. With the support of the state and central governments, Pune’s metro project is set to grow rapidly in the coming years, offering a more efficient and environmentally friendly urban transport solution for the city.
