The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to the Swargate to Katraj Underground Line Extension project in Pune. This extension, known as Line-l B, will cover 5.46 km and feature three underground stations connecting key areas like Market Yard, Bibwewadi, Balaji Nagar, and Katraj suburbs. The project is estimated to cost Rs. 2954.53 crore and is expected to be completed by February 2029.

Funding for the project will be equally shared between the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra, as well as contributions from bilateral agencies. The extension will integrate with the Swargate Multimodal Hub, providing seamless connectivity for commuters within and outside Pune City.

The Swargate to Katraj Underground Line aims to reduce road traffic congestion, enhance safety, and offer a more comfortable travel experience. It will link various bus stops, railway stations, recreational centers, residential areas, educational institutions, and business hubs. The projected daily ridership on the line is expected to reach 1.97 lakh passengers by 2057.

Maha-Metro will oversee the execution of the project, which includes civil, electro-mechanical, and other associated works. The organization has already begun pre-bid activities and is preparing tender documents for bidding.

Overall, this strategic expansion is seen as a significant step towards unlocking Pune’s economic potential, improving infrastructure, and supporting sustainable development in the city.
