The recent inauguration of the extended metro line from Swargate to the District Court has been a game-changer in Pune’s public transportation system. With a remarkable increase in ridership, around 17,470 passengers utilized the metro on Sunday, September 29th, between 4 PM and 11 PM. This surge in usage has led many passengers to urge Mahametro to extend the night metro service until midnight, although officials have cited maintenance work and technical requirements as obstacles for now.
Mahametro has successfully completed two key metro routes: the 17.5 km stretch from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate and the 14.5 km stretch from Vanaz to Ramwadi. These routes have been gradually opened to the public over the past two years, and the final phase’s inauguration on Sunday marked a significant milestone.
With an average daily passenger count of 1.57 lakh, commuters are expressing high satisfaction with the metro service, particularly in reducing traffic congestion along these routes. As demand for increased service frequency and extended operational hours grows, Mahametro has introduced a revised schedule for metro operations.
The metro now operates for 16 hours a day, from 6 AM to 10 PM, across both routes. Trains run every 10 minutes during off-peak hours and every 7 minutes during peak hours on both the PCMC to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi routes. The Pune Metro continues to be a vital component of the city’s public transport system, and further improvements to service frequency and operational hours may be necessary in the future to meet the needs of commuters.
