Pune Metro commuters have reason to rejoice as the metro services are set to extend their operational hours until 11 PM by the end of January 2025. This decision comes in response to the growing demand for late-night travel options, catering to commuters arriving from the railway station, airport, and those leaving work after dark.
With the extension of operational hours, commuters can expect increased frequency of trains with six additional trips added on both the Vanaz-Ramwadi and Pimpri-Swargate routes post-10 PM, running at a frequency of 10 minutes. This change aims to reduce waiting times and provide greater convenience for those traveling during late hours.
Pune Metro has seen a steady increase in daily footfall, with the daily ridership surpassing two lakh as of January 1, 2025. The extended hours are expected to cater to the growing demand, particularly for those relying on public transport during non-peak hours.
To facilitate the extension of operational hours, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) is working on the technical aspects. Commuters have long requested the extension of operating hours, highlighting the need for more flexible travel options.
In addition to extending operational hours, Maha Metro has launched an online platform for commuters to register complaints, suggestions, and feedback. This new system aims to streamline the process for commuters and improve service quality.
Improvements in feeder bus services to and from Metro stations are also underway, with PMPML restructuring bus routes to create better connections between the Metro and other areas, especially commercial hubs.
While the extension of operational hours is a positive step, factors such as maintenance, infrastructure readiness, security, and public awareness need to be considered to ensure smooth operations. Pune Metro’s commitment to enhancing the commuter experience through these initiatives is commendable, and further investments in infrastructure and amenities will be necessary to sustain the growth of the Metro service.
