Pune Metro Achieves Record Ridership on New Year’s Day: Pimpri-Swargate Line Takes the Lead

Pune Metro kicked off 2025 with a bang, setting a new record for daily ridership with a whopping 2,04,957 passengers on January 1. The Pimpri-Swargate Purple Line and the Vanaz-Ramwadi Aqua Line both saw a surge in passengers, showcasing the increasing popularity and efficiency of the metro system.

In a surprising turn of events, the Pimpri-Swargate Line outpaced the Vanaz-Ramwadi Line for the first time, with 1,02,783 passengers compared to 1,02,174 passengers. This shift in ridership highlights the demand for seamless connectivity between Pimpri and Swargate.

With 30 stations spread across 33 kilometers, Pune Metro currently operates two lines: the Purple Line covering 17.5 kilometers and the Aqua Line extending 14.5 kilometers. The system has become a go-to mode of transportation for many residents, especially during festive occasions and busy days.

On New Year’s Day, the metro saw a surge in passengers due to the influx of visitors to historic and religious sites like the Dagdusheth Ganpati temple and the Koregaon Bhima Vijay Stambh. The metro provided a convenient and time-saving option for commuters, leading to the record-breaking ridership numbers.

This achievement comes after a consistent upward trend in ridership, with the previous highest single-day record set during the Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhi processions in June 2024. The balanced demand across both metro lines indicates the widespread utility and acceptance of the system among Pune residents.

As Pune Metro continues to expand and attract more riders, it is clear that the system is reshaping the city’s public transportation landscape. The record-breaking ridership on New Year’s Day serves as a testament to the metro’s success and its role in enhancing urban mobility in Pune.
